How common are language-based learning disabilities?

Dyslexia symptoms vary by age and life stage. Every child with dyslexia has unique strengths and faces different challenges. However, there are some general signs that your child may need some extra help at school.

(1) Dyslexia symptoms in preschool children

Children with dyslexia have difficulty processing language. They sometimes confuse letters with words, have difficulty learning, and lag behind their peers in language skills.

The following signs may appear:

  • Difficulty learning or remembering letters of the alphabet

  • Pronunciation is error-prone.

  • Difficulty recognizing letters. For example, they mistake "t" for "d".

  • Rhyming patterns are not recognized, e.g. "Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall/Humpty Dumpty fell".

(2) Symptoms of dyslexia in primary school students

Signs of dyslexia become more pronounced in elementary school. Children with the disorder have a harder time learning how to read and write than their classmates.

The following signs may appear:

  • long reading time

  • Inability to distinguish certain letters and words, such as "b" instead of "d"

  • Don't associate letters with the sounds they make - "buh" for "b" or "em" for "m"

  • Difficulty with pronunciation when reading

  • Can't always understand what they've read

  • Misspelled words - even simple words like "and" and "dog"

  • Says that the text on the page looks blurry or jumps around

(3) Dyslexia symptoms after primary school graduation

Children who are able to hide their symptoms in elementary school may start having trouble in middle school as the demands on them increase. When communicating with their peers, they find it more difficult to withdraw from social activities.

The following signs may appear:

  • Difficulty writing clearly (spelling, grammar and punctuation errors)

  • Take a long time to complete an assignment or test

  • avoid reading aloud

  • Using the wrong word - such as "furnish" instead of "finish" or "lotion" instead of "ocean"

  • Can't remember the name of the word
